How to Talk Local
Senator Michael Bennet (D-Colo) appeared on Meet the Press yesterday, and I couldn't help but smile. He described the Democratic Party’s brand as “problematic,” emphasizing how we’ve neglected to focus our message and our commitments toward working-class and middle-class individuals.
Dear Treasured Readers, this should not be a surprise. Bennet’s speech must be a reminder to all of us, but reality hits when I write this.
We’ve still got Senator Schumer - no local talk there.
I wondered if Schumer had ever been to the Midwest, where small towns are dying and the statewide population does not keep up with our nation’s growth. I did a quick Google search and found no recent travel to Missouri, Kansas, South Dakota, Nebraska, or Iowa. In 2009, he went to Nebraska once (he went hunting) and in 2016, once to Iowa, where he tried to help Hillary. Well, how helpful was that?
Bennet said, the party has “lost touch with working people at a time when 50 years of trickle-down economics has meant that most Americans feel like no matter how hard they work, their kids are not going to live a life better than the life they led.”
But how would Senator Schumer know? He locks himself up in New York and then hangs out in Washington, DC. He does not lead, but he’s here; thus, “hangs out.”
So, let’s send Schumer a note: How can he walk the talk? How should he choose issues that “normal” people care about? This morning, I opened the newspaper.
MUSK/Trump’s DOGE is attempting to sell our government buildings. THE IDEA: The private sector buys them and rents them back to the government. Musk claims that the government will save money since it won’t have to cover cleaning and maintenance. So let’s be clear: When the private sector purchases, it will charge us—the taxpayers—for the services, the payments on the building loans, and the profits! WE DON’T WANT TO PAY MORE!
OOPS! Perhaps Schumer has pounded the table and shouted about this, but I missed it!
Canada gets it right! “TARIFFS ARE TAXES,” shout the new billboards. The Washington Post’s headline reads, “Tariffs touted to raise trillions.” Yes! Tariffs are simply a new name for piling more taxes on us. The billboards are everywhere, including Times Square. We will pay more taxes- trillions of dollars in taxes! WE DON’T WANT TO PAY MORE!
OOPS! If Schumer is speaking for us, his voice is barely a whisper.
Trump says he’s angry at Putin remark questioning Zelensky’s legitimacy. Trump followed this by stating, “I don’t think he [Putin] is going back on his word.”
Hello! Are Trump, Musk, and Vance so preoccupied with throwing people out of their jobs that they missed the memo? Hmm, Trump is "very angry.” Never mind that Putin continued to destroy schools, homes, and hospitals just hours after the worthless agreement was signed. WORTHLESS THEATER DOES NOT! KEEP US SAFE. PROTECTING DEMOCRACY DOES.
OOPS! Where’s Schumer? Maybe hiding behind Waldo? Schumer needs role models.
So let’s look at Senator Bennet again. Bennet said Gabbard and Ratcliffe ‘lied repeatedly’ to Congress about Signal chat. Can Republicans not even tell the difference between classified information and trash talk? Even the Secretary of Defense does not know.
“Classified” keeps us safe. Trash talk mocks our intelligence.
We need leaders who speak. How about SPEAK SOFTLY AND CARRY A BIG STICK? Schumer seems to do neither. If he can’t or won’t do it, then …
Dear Senator Schumer, it’s time to go.
