Short But Sweet
Recovering from Okoboji Writers Retreat
What! You missed it? I am so sorry.
It was a great chance to meet other writers – journalists, opinion writers, poets, short story writers, novelists, and more, while learning from all of them.
How to write short? See below for the most concise story I’ll probably ever write.
Girl. Boy. Ice cream cone. Tears.
Want to write about serious matters? Yes, I do, so I learned to test my work:
Detail matters. Be specific to get people’s attention in the beginning. And do it again at the end.
Impact? Be clear about why your chosen subject matters.
Authenticity. Tie in life experience. Let your reader feel the pain … and the joy.
Personal? Yes, use your personal experience to make your subject real.
Maybe you know all this, but I come from the school of There’s Always More to Learn and More to Write About.
So, crossed fingers, I have returned from Okoboji Writers Retreat full of ideas. There are so many things to write about. I love reading yours, Dear Writers, and hopefully, you will love mine, too.
As a preview, here are some subjects I’m tempted to write about: Redirected Aggression, Pick Your War, Fighting Your Way to the Middle Class, Talking Local, The Time I Should Have Spoken Out …But I knew I would have been fired.
Next year, consider joining us at Okoboji Writers Retreat. I’ll be there.
